The votes on account of the Ministry of Internal and Home Affairs and Provincial Councils and local government and the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development taken up for debate in Parliament yesterday.
Joining the relevant debate non-cabinet Minister Dr. Harsha De Silva said construction plans that may block the major canals in the major cities should not be approved. The problems that are erupting due the construction of huge buildings in the Colombo city should also be solved with immediate effect. Parliamentarian Mahinda Amaraweera said that implementing a light railway project in the Colombo city is commendable. This may lead to ease the traffic congestion in the city. State Minister Ali Sahim Maulana said that local government institutions should be established considering the ethnic ratio in the relevant areas.
Parliamentarian Susil Premajayanth pointed out the need to solve the duty related problems of Grama Sewa Niladaries.
State Minister J.C. Alawathuwala said that new technology has been introduced to divisional secretariats. The one day service to issue national identity cards will be started at district level. Birth certificates are now being issued in all three languages. A one day service is also available to issue title deeds for lands.
Meanwhile, the heads of expenditure of several ministries were defeated in Parliament.
Minister Ranjith Maddumabandara says however, the defeated votes will be presented again and passed.
