The “National Harvest Ceremony” or the “Aluth Sahal Mangalyaya” was held on a grand scale opposite the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya in Anuradhapura, this morning. President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe were in attendance together with Minister of Agriculture: P Harrison.
Addressing the event, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe called to mind how the ancient kings constructed tanks, and strengthened the farming industry of the country. He also reminisced on the contribution made to the Agriculture Sector by various Ministers of Agriculture as well as Sri Lanka’s first Prime Minister D S Senanayaka. Significant milestones noted were the Mahaweli Irrigation Scheme and also the recent Moragahakanda Irrigation Scheme.
