State Minister Palitha Range Bandara says, a systematic programme will be put in place to counter the Human-Elephant Conflict in the Puttalam District. It is now evident, the main reason for elephants to wander into villages is due to timber smugglers damaging elephant fences.

Speaking to the Subharathi Discussion Programme aired over the SLBC this morning the Minister said, steps have been taken to appoint a security officer, per kilo-meter, within the next few months. The elephant population in the Puttalam District has increased. He added, attention has been focused on controlling the growth in the wild elephant population, by scientific means.

Also joining in the discussion, the Puttalam District Secretary said, plans are underway to begin several Wind Power Generation Plants in the district. The Director of Fisheries to the North Western Province said, inland fisheries will be expanded, thereby 120 reservoirs will be developed.
