A programme is underway to recall retired railway staff, to prevent inconvenience to the public due to the on-going strike action, even as the Railways have been declared an Essential Service.
Thereby, the programme to re-absorb retired engine drivers, station masters, signal supervisors and track supervisors was held at the Shalika Hall in Narahenpita, this morning.
Interviews were conducted, and the candidates will be awarded a one year contract.
Acting Secretary to the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation: Malkanthi Ekanayake says, the Ministry of Finance, in the discussions held with the trade unions had given a time scale for solutions to be implemented.
The Railway employees’ appeals will not be rejected in anyway.
However, she points out, the unions resorting to trade union action at this juncture is totally unreasonable.
