Sri Lankan Tourism has made a stronger recovery sooner than expected.
Tourist arrivals in June almost doubled, from 37,802 in May, to 63,072 in Jude.
However, the when compared with the previous year, it is a 57 per cent decline, since usually, over one million tourists visit Sri Lanka by the end of the month of June.
Minister of Tourism, Wild Life, and Christian Affairs: John Amaratunga says, the initial prediction for the industry to recover was nine months, however, the latest figures confirm that it could happen within four months.
Speaking at the opening of the third Curry Pot Restaurant in Colombo 4 yesterday, Minister Amaratunga said, the ‘Bible’ of tourism: ‘Lonely Planet’ – despite the Easter Sunday blasts – has once again pronounced Sri Lanka as the world’s best destination for tourists to visit.
While giving tremendous free publicity, this reassurance by Lonely Plant is a huge encouragement for travel agents and tour operators, to market Sri Lanka in their usual aggression.
The Minister pointed out, one reason for the speedy recovery is the assurance given by the government and the security forces on the country’s overall security situation.
