Steps will be taken to expedite Wewu Gam Pubuduwa programme which nurtures agricultural economy. President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed to provide benefits to the people in seven districts within next few months. The project will be implemented in river basins of Malwathu Oya, Mee Oya and Yaan Oya in Polonnaruwa, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Vavuniya, Puttalam, Trincomalee and Mannar districts. The project will be implemented with 3,682 million rupees from the Green Climate Fund and with 1,250 million rupees from the government funds. The Green Climate Funds were received according to the request by the President. Steps will be taken to establish 325 rural tanks of cascading and 75 environmental systems, to develop paddy cultivation in 9,750 hectares. Development of 140 tanks has been completed and those will be vested with the public in August. A project to provide clean drinking water to the people in the close proximity to the tanks has been launched. The Green Climate Fund will provide 1,732 million rupees and the government will provide 1,069 million rupees in this regard. Establishing of 35 rural irrigation schemes and 4,000 rain water harvesting systems and water purification plants will take place under the project. Measures will be taken to establish new water purification plants at schools and rural hospitals under the programme.
