The government says the flour price has been increased without the concurrence of the government. The prices of the bread also increased without the government’s approval. Director of Ministry of Commerce Indika Ranasinghe says the Ministry has commenced a special investigation in this regard. A discussion with the participation of Consumer Affairs Authority was held this morning to discuss these matters in detail. Secretary to the Ministry Ranjith Ashoka chaired the meeting. It is reported that the world flour price has dropped at this moment. However, Chairman of Food Importers’ Association Nihal Senevirathne alleges that two local flour importing companies have been dictating terms on this matter. These companies are trying to maintain a monopoly in the local flour market.
Meanwhile, Director General of Agricultural Department Dr. W.M. Weerakoon said increase on the flour prices will benefit the local manufacturers of the relevant or equivalent products. The health officials also noted that increase on the flour price will discourage the consumption of bread products among the consumers. As a result the consumers will look for hygienic alternative products such as rice products and rice based bread.
