Speaking in Parliament today, Minister Gayantha Karunatilleke said, the attention of the Ministry of Finance will be drawn, on granting for semi government and private sector employees, the 2,500-rupee allowance which is being paid to government servants, which came into effect from last month.
He further stated, the Minister of Labour has no legal authority to grant this allowance for semi-government institutions and private sector organisations.

Meanwhile, the Bill to amend the Merchant Shipping Act was presented in Parliament today. In addition, the Bill to abolish the death penalty was also presented in Parliament today.
