Details of a document file given by a Maulavi on Islamist extremist activities have been revealed at the Parliament Select Committee

The Special Parliament Committee appointed to probe into the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks was met at the Parliament complex today. Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Pieris gave evidence as the first witness of the day. Giving evidence he said that a Maulavi named Zahalan sent a document file to the Attorney General Department on a protest at Kattankudi in 2014 and Islamist extremist activities. He said that then Attorney General Jayantha Jayasuriya was informed about it on 05th June 2017. Steps were also taken to inform the IGP. He said that thereafter Maulavi Zahalan sent the request letter for a discussion to review the matter. The Deputy Solicitor General said that the Maulavi has gone to Terrorist Investigation Division and they have obtained a statement from him. He said that there was no mentioning of terrorism the document file of Zahalan Maulavi. He further said that when the OIC was questioned about the extremist activities in Kattankudi area, it was visible there was some hesitation to act against those activities.
