An ‘English Speaking Day’ has been proposed, to be practiced every week in all schools, to upgrade the English Language skills of students.

Minister of Education: Akila Viraj Kariyawasam says, the English Language skills of school children will be upgraded, to enable them to meet with global education targets.
Thereby, steps have been taken to issue a Circular and a Teachers’ Guide, with regard to the efficient use of the subject matter detailed by the National Education Institute, on teaching the English Language.

In addition, it has been proposed, to set aside one day of the week, in which all communication in all schools will be done in English – an ‘English Speaking Day’.

An initiative to upgrade the English speaking and listening skills of students is already underway across all nine provinces.
Speech and Listening Evaluation Guidelines – compiled by an Advisory Panel comprising lecturers at the National Colleges of Education, and supervisors at the National Education Institute, the Department of Examinations, and the British Council – have been distributed across all provinces.

Meanwhile, the release of text books for the next academic year will officially commence, under the patronage of Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, at the storage complex of the Education Publications Department in Pitipana-Homagama, on Friday.
The newly printed text books comprise 43 million copies of 448 types of books required by students in all schools and Pirivenas.
