Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka says, if far-sighted strategies were envisaged, it would have been possible implement a multipurpose project on the Kelani River, before any further implementations on the Mahaweli River.

The Minister expressed these views, joining in the occasion to commence construction work of the Oliyamulla Flood Water Pump System, which is being designed to control flood waters in the Kelaniya-Wattala area, when the Kelani River rises above spill level.

He further stated, in addition to flood controls, the Kelani River will be utilized for passenger transportation, and thereby new towns will be created along its banks.

It has been observed, residents in the Peliyagoda, Wattala and Kolonnawa areas are prone to flood risks, and also they live in houses that do not conform to satisfactory living standards.

This area will be developed into a “vibrant economic zone”, as it has been planned to shift all wholesale enterprises, including the Pettah Maning Market, to this region.
